Famara Diedhiou has revealed which of his former clubs he was supporting when Bristol City hosted Cardiff City in the Severnside derby on Sunday afternoon.

The two sides went head-to-head at Ashton Gate at the weekend, and it was the visitors who took the lead around ten minutes after half-time.

Ollie Tanner's stunning strike would put Cardiff in front, although it would not prove to be enough to earn them a first league win over the season.

With 17 minutes of normal time remaining, Luke McNally headed home his first goal for Bristol City, to ensure both sides would settle for a point in a 1-1 draw.

Now it seems as though Diedhiou, was a particularly interested spectator at Ashton Gate for the latest installment of this derby.

Diedhiou backs Bristol City over Cardiff

Back in the 2024 January transfer window, Diedhiou had joined Cardiff on a loan deal from Spanish side Granada.

During his time in the Welsh capital, the striker scored twice in 16 appearances for the club, before departing when his loan expired at the end of last season.

Prior to that though, the Senegal international did have a longer association with Bristol City, spending four years with the Robins between 2017 and 2021.

While he was at Ashton Gate, Diedhiou made 169 appearances in all competitions, scoring 51 goals and providing nine assists.

As a result, it seems it was Bristol City who the striker was supporting when his two old clubs faced off in the derby.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday afternoon, the striker posted a picture from the home end at Ashton Gate for that game, along with the caption "Derby Day", and some red and white emojis.

Following that result, Bristol City are currently 16th in the Championship table, with 11 points from nine games.

They will return to action after the international break on the 19th October, when they travel to The Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough.

Cardiff meanwhile, are still bottom of the table despite taking four points from two games, as they search for a permanent replacement for manager Erol Bulut, who was sacked last month.

Their next game sees them host Plymouth Argyle at The Cardiff City Stadium, also on the 19th October.

For his part, Diedhiou is now playing for Clermont Foot, who are 13th in the French second-tier after a 4-1 win over Guingamp - in which the striker scored - on Saturday.

Understandable allegiances for Diedhiou

It is perhaps not surprising that Diedhiou looks to have favoured Bristol City over on Sunday afternoon.

Obviously, the striker does have links to both clubs, and he will no doubt be taking an interest in how both of them fare over the rest of the campaign.

Ultimately though, he was a Bristol City player for much longer, and he did make more of an impact at Ashton Gate.

As a result, he is likely to feel a stronger connection with the Robins, and is therefore going to want more success for them in the vast majority of games.

But with a draw meaning Bristol City have won just one of their last six, and that Cardiff remain bottom of the table, this result did not do either side too many favours regardless.
