Joop van Daele, who helped Feyenoord win the Intercontinental Cup in 1970, has died at the age of 77. The former footballer’s family announced this to RTV Rijnmond.

On 9 September 1970, Van Daele experienced the pinnacle of his Feyenoord career. As a substitute for Coen Moulijn, and following a previous leg that remained 2-2, he scored to make it 1-0 against Estudiantes at De Kuip to seal the Intercontinental Cup.

Van Daele became famous not only because of the goal against Estudiantes, but also as ‘the glasses’.

A truly vintage precursor to Edgar Davids, Van Daele played his first match for Feyenoord in 1968 and took to the pitch wearing glasses in those years.

After scoring the only goal in the battle for the Club World Cup, his glasses were taken away by an Argentinian opponent and broken. The glasses in question can still be seen in the museum in De Kuip, and songs have even been written about them.

There will be no public farewell at De Kuip as Van Daele’s funeral will take place in private, relatives have told RTV Rijnmond.
