After a poor end to 2024, Barcelona have started the new year on an emphatic note. Their first game of the year saw them secure a comprehensive win over Barbastro in Copa Del Rey.

This was followed by back-to-back wins in Saudi Arabia, which saw Barcelona secure the Spanish Super Cup and that too by beating Real Madrid in the final.

During this crucial period, one player who was a standout performer was Gavi.

Redemption complete for Gavi?

The young midfielder has made a remarkable recovery from a challenging injury spell that had cast doubts on his role at the club.

However, under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick, Gavi has not only returned to the pitch but has revitalized his role within the squad.

Initially, Flick was cautious with Gavi, integrating him slowly back into the team with limited minutes in his first few appearances after a long injury layoff.

However, after a series of short stints, including games against tough opponents like Sevilla, Bayern, and Real Madrid, where he played less than 15 minutes, Flick decided it was time for a strategic shift, reports SPORT.

The turning point came late in 2024 when Gavi was given extended playtime against Las Palmas and Celta, where he began to show glimpses of his former self.

His performance against Athletic Club in the Super Cup semi-final was particularly telling, as he not only scored but also provided an assist.

The final against Real Madrid was a feather in his wing testament to Gavi’s resurgence. His involvement in winning a crucial penalty showcased his tactical acumen and spirit on the field.

His consistent performances have continued into the Copa del Rey, where he scored in the match against Betis, further cementing his place in the team.

Flick’s strategy to slowly reintegrate the La Masia graduate has worked perfectly. And this is an excellent signal for Barcelona, as someone like Gavi back to full fitness could go a long way in boosting their chances during the remainder of the campaign.
