The fans of the RFC Liège provided a beautiful moment in their clash with Jong Genk on Sunday. Genk goalkeeper Brent Stevens saved a penalty to merit the home fans singing to him at full-time, considering some terrible personal news revealed before the game.
Jong Genk were first relegated from the Challenger Pro League on Sunday. A victory over Liège could’ve allowed the Belgian team’s reserves to remain in the competition, yet a visit to RFC Liège ended 3-1. While it was a painful afternoon for Genk, injury time brought a heartwarming moment.
With the score at 3-1, Liège were awarded a penalty right in front of the home support. It was the perfect opportunity to put the icing on the cake as striker Zakaria Atteri had already scored twice and had an eye on his hat-trick. However, his attempt was saved well by goalkeeper Stevens.
Responding to the stop, the Liège fans applauded Stevens. Going one further, and understanding that the 21-year-old keeper had recently lost his father after a long illness, the home faithful sang to him. There was even a hug with some fans. It will undoubtedly give Stevens, who made his debut for Jong Genk, a boost.
