Portuguese legend Pepe has on Thursday announced his retirement from football, at the age of 41.

And, as part of his message, the iconic defender was sure to pay special tribute to La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid.

Pepe, of course, spent the most successful years of his lengthy career on the books of Real, a decade-long stint between 2007 and 2017.

The now-41-year-old carved out a special place for himself in the hearts of Blancos fans the world over, owing to his all-action, never-say-die stylings.

As much gave rise to no fewer than 12 trophies, including three Champions League crowns.

After at last coming to the decision to hang up his boots after a spell back on the books of Porto in his native Portugal, Pepe, in turn, was sure to reiterate his undying love for the reigning La Liga champions.

Speaking as part of a 33-minute long video posted to YouTube on Thursday, the veteran stopper explained:

“It was special to spend 10 years at the biggest club in the world. The first day I stepped in Madrid, I was so happy. After 10 years I left with my head held high, I always gave everything to Real Madrid.

“What I will never forget in my 10 years in Madrid is the affection from the fans. It’s a great emotion when the stadium screams your name. The titles, the games, the stadium, the club…

“Real Madrid will forever be in my heart, always.
