Midfielder Felipe Melo has no regrets about departing Inter to join Palmeiras in Brazil, after helping the club lift the Copa Libertadores last week.

The former Brazil international signed for Inter from Turkish outfit Galatasaray in 2015 but struggled for regular playing time at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and ultimately returned to his homeland with Palmeiras two years later.

Melo’s time with the Verdao has proved to be hugely successful, as he captained the club to their 10th Brasileirao title in 2018, before helping them win the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 1999 with victory over Santos last weekend.

Speaking to Palmeiras’ official club website, Melo spoke of his decision to depart European football with Inter and return to Brazil, claiming that it had been the right option for him to take.

“After a successful career in Europe and being with a team like Inter, it was worth leaving to start from scratch again with a great club like Palmeiras,” the 37-year-old declared.

“It was one of the best decisions of my life. We still have more work to do but at the end of it all I’ll look back and say it was worth it.”

Melo made 38 appearances for Inter across two seasons before moving to Sao Paulo-based Palmeiras in January 2017.
