Reports are reaching us here at Ibrox Noise that the Belgian press has allegedly named Rangers manager Philippe Clement as favourite for the Belgium national position alongside Thierry Henry, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Sergio Conceicao and Hervé Renard as the leading contenders.

Clement remains extremely well thought of back in his homeland with ex-mentor Vincent Mannaert speaking earlier this year of his views:

“Philippe and I have known each other for a very long time and since we were both playing, he was at the beginning of a fantastic career and me at the beginning of a less bright career! We had great results in the Champions League at Club Brugge and had a draw with PSG – with Messi, with Neymar, with Mbappe – and we had a draw in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid. And we had great celebrations when we won the title. He is a very hard-working person, he believes in hard work and preparation. As a player, he was also a leader, he was a captain for many years at Brugge. You see that leadership coming back as a coach, he leads a group. He prepares himself very well. He is analytically very strong, he is able to get out the angle of the opponent and he combines that with emotional leadership.”

The big deal? Mannaert was just appointed the Belgian FA’s sport director and is obviously very close with Clement.

Rangers’ boss has stated he isn’t leaving, but then he’s told many porkies before so we don’t take a lot of what he says seriously, and if the Belgian FA made him the offer he’d clearly be very tempted.

You don’t get many chances to lead your country and Clement would find that hard to turn down.

It would be the perfect solution for everyone, because Rangers, instead of having to sack Clement and pay him off, would in fact get compensation of around £6M from the Koninklijke Belgische Voetbalbond.

This would be perfect. The fans get rid of a manager they no longer like, and the club gets around £6M for the privilege.

Will it happen?

He’s definitely a front-runner for this and Mannaert may well pull some strings…
