AC Milan pulled off perhaps the shock of the night in the Champions League as they went to the Santiago Bernabeu and beat Real Madrid 3-1.
It wasn’t just a win against the current holders of the trophy but also a domination in which many players shone. Malick Thiaw got the opener with a header from a corner, Alvaro Morata pounhed on a rebound for the second and Tijjani Reijnders finished off a fantastic move for the third.
Paulo Fonseca chose to make four changes to the starting line-up and it proved to be a winning tactical approach, with a five-man defensive line causing frustrations for Kylian Mbappe and co.
La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Milan Galacticos. Champions League: Madness at the Bernabeu of another era against the Champions Real. Leao flies and leads Il Diavolo. Thiaw, Morata and Reijnders on target. And Fonseca’s revenge.”
Corriere dello Sport: “Real Milan. Historic victory in Madrid with a transformed Leao. Fonseca wins at the Bernabeu, Ancelotti delivered a KO. Thiaw scores with his head, Vinicius from the penalty spot, then Morata and Reijnders secure the victory, which relaunches Milan in the standings.”
Tuttosport: “Milan smash. Thiaw, Morata and Reijnders overwhelm Real and Ancelotti: Leao and Theo, what a response! Extraordinary and well-deserved feat at the Bernabeu. Vinicius scores a penalty. Maignan triumphs against Mbappe and Brahim Diaz, but Lunin and the post avoid a heavier defeat for the miserable Madridistas. Fonseca: ‘We’re not that bad’.”
