Gian Piero Gasperini insists that rotations are ‘normal’, so Mateo Retegui didn’t start in a ‘fundamental’ 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
La Dea have four points in two games after a 3-0 away victory against Shakhtar on Wednesday.
“We put in a solid performance from the beginning. I feared this game, but our approach was excellent, technically and tactically,” Gasp told Sky Sport.
“Finishing the first half 2-0 up helped us, but the team was always confident and controlled the match well.
“This win was fundamental after the draw against Arsenal. Ultimately, it was easier than expected, but we know Serie A will be tough. We must be at our best against Genoa to earn three points and climb the table.”
Atalanta‘s next Serie A match is against strugglers Genoa, a former club of Gasperini.
“We are trying to involve all players. Some new signings are already making a significant contribution, while others are a bit behind. We need to play and improve,” he said.
“Toloi could recover this week. Kossounou probably only had a cramp, while Djimsiti has a hip problem, which we’ll assess. The problem with this fixture list is that a player can remain out for many days and, therefore, many games, even with a minor injury.
This could cause trouble for us, especially because most injuries are in the same department. I wanted to try Godfrey tonight. He has recovered and he can help us.”
Italy international Retegui didn’t start for the second time in a row.
“Retegui has started two of the last four games,” explained Gasperini.
“With five substitutions available, strikers always play. Rotations are normal. We must be ready against Genoa. If you are not fully fit in Serie A, you struggle.”
