GdS: Fonseca looking for a ‘physical Milan’ to overcome Conte – the idea

Napoli travel to San Siro on Tuesday night, and Paulo Fonseca is looking for a ‘physical’ AC Milan side to overcome the league leaders.

Tuesday’s game has already been deemed decisive for Milan’s season, and failing to overcome the challenge posed by Antonio Conte’s side could see them 11 points behind the current leaders in October. Whilst the Rossoneri have a game in hand, such a sizeable gap is difficult to narrow easily.

For this reason, Fonseca is eyeing a change of system, with a more physical side in mind, as Gazzetta dello Sport writes. The Portuguese head coach is looking to flank Youssouf Fofana with Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and whilst the Englishman is likely to play as the Trequartista, a bank of three midfield could be seen at times.

Fonseca’s idea is to overload the midfield with physicality, to counter Conte’s team, and essentially, try to beat them at their own game. Whilst the idea is forced somewhat by suspensions, the report suggests that a ‘weaker’ midfield could suffer against the powerhouses of the Partenopei.

Such wholesale changes in midfield are a risk, but as the Derby della Madonnina proved, sometimes risks pay off and given what is at stake for the Diavolo, it must pay off again.
