Germany took the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a 1-0 win over Spain and a last-minute Ann-Katrin Berger penalty save.

Spain hit the crossbar twice in the first half, Teresa Abelleira from a long-range free kick and then Aitana Bonmati close to the break, Jenni Hermoso’s follow-up shot deflected narrowly over the top.

Alexandra Popp had a go from 35 yards but Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll made the save, Janina Minge pulled a shot narrowly wide after the restart.

Germany were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute as Cata Coll collided with Giulia Gwinn, who got up to convert from the spot.

Ann-Katrin Berger kept out Hermoso’s downward header and dramatically saved a spot-kick in the dying seconds of stoppage time.

Lucia Garcia was clipped by Minge but the resulting penalty by Alexia Putellas was pushed away by a diving Berger.
