Gosens: Fiorentina are ‘throwing away’ good work but need to ‘stick together’

Robin Gosens feels like Fiorentina are ‘throwing away’ everything they did in the opening part of the season, but believes that staying ‘united’ and focusing on ‘positive thoughts’ is their only way to get out of a difficult situation.

Raffaele Palladino’s side looked in full control of their game against Torino after the opening 45 minutes, which saw the hosts breaking the deadlock and finding themselves in numerical superiority after Ali Dembele’s dismissal.

Yet, Gosens lamented that his side ‘disappeared’ after the break, allowing the Granata to capitalise on a defensive distraction to score the equaliser and extend the Viola’s Serie A winless streak to six games, giving the left-back the impression that negative moments are affecting them ‘too much’ at this stage of the campaign.

Gosens: Fiorentina must ‘stick together’ and ‘think positively’

“Obviously, the mood isn’t great,” Gosens said speaking to DAZN after their home draw.

“We’re trying to understand the moment we’re in. We talked a lot during the week, and we felt like we had prepared really well. In fact, we saw a very good Fiorentina in the first half, but unfortunately, we disappeared in the second half.

“We have the feeling that negative moments are affecting us too much right now, and that’s not okay.

“Of course, we want to get out of this situation. Just a few weeks ago, we were having a really strong season. Unfortunately, we’re now throwing away all the good work we had done.

“This is the moment to stick together. It’s a simple and overused word, but now we need to prove it on the pitch every week, not just say it. We need to show that we want to get back to winning, suffer together, and stay compact as a team, because only together can we get through a moment like this.”

Gosens admitted the ‘mental side’ is becoming hard to handle as the repeated setbacks they suffered in recent weeks are somehow affecting their performances, which is why he urged his teammates to ‘think positively’.

“At some point, the mental side becomes a key factor. Psychologically, it’s not easy to shake off all the negative aspects,” the 30-year-old continued.

“When you’re winning, everything feels easy, but during a tough moment, everyone has something to say, everything looks bleak, and your mindset becomes crucial.

“We need to stay united and think positively because positive thoughts also influence your legs and help you push harder. We’re still in a good position in the standings. We know this is a difficult moment, but the only way out is to face it together.”
