Greg Taylor to Rangers latest as Celtic star gives major verdict

Here we are, folks. The Rangers football rumour mill is churning out something spicy: Rangers are supposedly interested in Greg Taylor, who wears Celtic’s colors, once his contract with them runs out. Sounds dramatic, right? But hold your horses! Taylor, from all accounts, seems less than thrilled about the idea of changing not only his place of work but also the color of his shirt—from green and white to blue. Can you blame him? This isn’t just any transfer. It’s like taking the fast lane straight into a tank full of sharks!

Let’s pause there for a second. Taylor isn’t just any old player. He’s a key part of Celtic’s team. And over the course of his now quite lengthening career, he’s doing well by the numbers. At 27, he still has what is for many the best part of a footballer’s life ahead of him. So why would he want to make a move that could be harmful, even potentially fatal, to his career? It’s not as if the brouhaha around Rangers and Celtic isn’t already legendary enough in football circles. And the “Old Firm” rivalries—we’re talking Batman v. Joker intensity here—have seemingly only grown in the past decade.

Pundits are thoroughly engaged with this idea. Football columnist Michael Stewart, for instance, brands the potential move as practically genius—especially if it’s on a free transfer—since he sees Taylor as possibly being even better than any of the left-backs that Rangers currently have. And yes, that would be wild. Since nobody but nobody has made the switch Taylor would be making in over a century! We’re talking close to 120 years! Not only would a player be making what is considered by many as the most treacherous of moves, but of course, the fans would be largely against it—at least, that’s the perception. And again, it’s mostly Rangers fans who are against it, largely because of the whole “legendary betrayal” thing.

Now, if the drama already associated with this story weren’t enough, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that other clubs seem to be keeping an eye on Taylor, too. According to my colleague, Elgin Taylor is wanted by Dinamo Zagreb and some unnamed MLS teams (i.e., soccer teams residing in the United States of America). As my colleague also notes, this makes Taylor a man much in demand. One has to wonder why, if he is so in demand, he would want to go to a club like the Rangers, even though it is undoubtedly a storied institution with much glory in its past, when he has the opportunity to go somewhere like sunny California.

In the final analysis, it would seem that Rangers are poised to make a move for Taylor when he becomes available next summer—if Taylor’s current resistance to the idea of leaving Celtic can be shifted. In terms of the narrative, here, it’s something like our old friend Andy Carroll being asked to play for Sunderland. When this happens, the Old Firm will once again have a real gear-change moment.
