Hansi Flick’s debut season at FC Barcelona has been nothing short of remarkable, capped off with a domestic treble. Yet despite their success, the narrow Champions League semi-final exit to Inter Milan left a sting, a reminder that even the smallest gaps in quality can cost dearly.
The two legs against Inter Milan, which were an absolute classic, showed Barcelona just how important it is to have a world-class shot-stopper. Yan Sommer had one of the games of his life, especially in the second leg, not allowing Flick’s men to find a late equaliser.
Barcelona cannot remember the last time Marc-Andre Ter Stegen put up such a performance on a big Champions League night, and although Wojciech Szczesny did something similar against Benfica earlier this season, he couldn’t do it against Inter Milan.

Now, as per Fichajes, Hansi Flick has demanded the signing of a new goalkeeper ahead of next season as he believes this vital reinforcement is what would help the Catalan club be genuine contenders for the Champions League title.
As per the report, Flick is not convinced of having Marc-Andre Ter Stegen as the starting goalkeeper, as his form has been inconsistent for quite some time now. Although the club would love to have Szczesny in goal, the Pole is yet to commit to a new deal.
Deco has already started working on the coach’s instructions, and Barcelona have set their sights on two La Liga shot-stoppers: Joan Garcia and Leo Roman. The former is attracting interest from most top clubs in Europe, and the latter has showcased his mettle on numerous occasions.

Ter Stegen is currently the Barcelona club captain, and he surely won’t be happy with accepting a secondary role in the squad. That said, the German international is 33 years old, and one cannot remember the last time he had an outstanding game.
Sometimes, to save a body, you have to be courageous enough to rip off an arm, and sacrificing Ter Stegen for the greater good of the team is something Barcelona must consider, seriously.
With Flick now reportedly pushing for a new goalkeeper, a generational shift between the posts could be on the horizon at Camp Nou. Whether it’s Ter Stegen, Szczesny, Garcia, or Roman who takes the gloves, the message is clear: to conquer Europe, every position must inspire complete confidence.
