Birmingham City's summer spending spree has been justified as the Blues sit pretty at the top of League One.

Having broken the third-tier transfer record multiple times, it seemed impossible for any team to match them, and gradually, Chris Davies' side have pulled further ahead of the pack. With a 12-point advantage over those below them, promotion should be secured in April, followed by the title not long after.

Bluenoses also have an EFL Trophy Final to look forward to, and they could become the first team since Bristol City to achieve the double of the League One title and the EFL Trophy.

Throughout the campaign, several players have stood out, from the dominant Christoph Klarer at the back to the technically gifted Tomoki Iwata in midfield. However, to get them over the line, Davies will be demanding incremental improvements across the squad as they look to break multiple records in the final weeks of the season.

Birmingham supporters have, of course, greeted this season with high expectations, and Football League World's resident Bluenose, Mike Gibbs, is hoping to see an improvement from Willum Willumsson in the final weeks of the campaign.

"The one player we need to see an improvement from is Willum Willumsson," said Gibbs.

"He has certainly dropped off in the past month or so and missed a real gilt-edged chance at the weekend.

"We know he is capable of it because he had a significant number of goal contributions in the first half of the season, but it seems to have tailed off, and he has become less and less effective.

"I would potentially say a rest, but I believe he is on international duty with Iceland. It feels like, physically and mentally, he could do with a bit of a break to rediscover his form."

Willumsson needs to find early season form for Birmingham

Signing from Go Ahead Eagles in the summer, Willumsson hit the ground running upon his arrival with four goals and the same number of assists in his opening 13 games.

However, since then, he has managed just two goal involvements in the following 18 league fixtures and hasn't provided any since a 3-0 win against Wigan Athletic at the start of 2025.

For a player who predominantly finds himself in the attacking third, this isn't good enough and in Birmingham's final 10 games of the season he has to find more for his side.

Throughout his career, he has never been the most prolific in terms of output, but dropping down to the third tier of English football, you would have expected more from a player who cost £3.5 million.

While Birmingham will likely get the job done regardless of how Willumsson performs, he must keep his prospects in mind. If Knighthead and Davies don’t see him as ready for the Championship, they won’t hesitate to find a replacement, with their sights firmly set on the Premier League.
