Marcus Rashford enjoyed his first competitive cameo in eight weeks last night when he made his Aston Villa debut off the bench against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Villans became the latest side to pile the misery on Spurs’ shoulders, who exited the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the span of just three days. Their next fixture is a Premier League clash at home to Manchester United, and with both teams in such disarray, the three points will be crucial to the managers’ hopes of finishing in the top half of the table.

Nonetheless, Rashford enjoyed a bright 24 minutes of action after replacing Donyell Malen in the closing stages of the tie. As per Sofascore, he took 22 touches, made 13 accurate passes – giving him a success rate of 93 per cent – completed one dribble, won three aerial duels and won one ground duel.

He was also unlucky not to win a free-kick on the edge of the area when Pedro Porro pulled the forward down to stop him from cutting into the area and getting a shot away – though referee Anthony Taylor was having none of it.

Reacting to the United loanee’s showing at full-time, journalist Henry Winter wrote: “And now every game, that has to be the approach Marcus Rashford takes to this wonderful opportunity handed to him by Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

“Rashford seized the 30 minutes (including injury time) when coming off the bench against Tottenham Hotspur. He looked fitter than reported. He was heavily involved, pressing and passing. He was a threat and will be even more so when Ollie Watkins is fit, and Rashford can attack more off the left.”

With regards to his fitness point, the 27-year-old actually impressed Villa staff after he recorded the fourth-lowest body fat percentage of the entire squad last week. Rashford also requested that he train on the two days off the players were given, clearly looking to get back up to speed after his lengthy absence from the pitch.
