The player in question is former Man Utd goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who was a world class performer for some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s best sides.

On top of that, the Dutchman has also done well in his post-playing days in a similar role at Ajax, so it’s not surprising to see Ferdinand is a big fan.

Voetbal Primeur once linked Van der Sar as a candidate for that kind of job at Old Trafford, though it never amounted to anything, but watch below as Ferdinand says he’s still been trying…

"I'm enjoying my life really well at the moment, so i'm OK" ? Edwin van der Sar isn't too sure about taking @rioferdy5's offer to come back and run Man Utd ? — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) January 26, 2025

Ferdinand made it clear he rates Van der Sar highly after showing he can run a football club successfully, but his fellow pundit for yesterday’s game between Fulham and United made it clear he’s not really interested in the job.

Do Manchester United need more changes at board level?

It’s been all change at United under the ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, with key figures like Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth coming in, though the latter has already left the club.

That could mean another big appointment is needed, and Van der Sar would surely be a popular choice due to his expertise and connections to the club.

Ferdinand knows the former United ‘keeper well, and perhaps he’ll keep pushing this one until he succeeds.

Still, it’s a big challenge at United right now, with the whole club struggling badly despite numerous changes made since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.

No one has quite been able to get it right, and there’s so much competition in the Premier League now that it looks like a long way back for a team that was a dominant force for so long under Ferguson.
