Alisson and Mac Allister Injury Concerns for Liverpool: Lynch’s Take on Key Absences

Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace came with a significant cost, as both Alisson Becker and Alexis Mac Allister sustained injuries that could impact the club’s upcoming fixtures. During the Media Matters podcast on Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch shared his concerns over these key injuries, offering insights into the potential implications for Liverpool’s season. With Liverpool sitting atop the Premier League under new manager Arne Slot, the loss of these influential players could pose a considerable challenge.

Alisson Becker: A Vital Absence

Alisson Becker, Liverpool’s star goalkeeper, has been instrumental in their defensive solidity this season. Lynch highlighted Alisson’s importance, describing him as “absolutely vital” to Liverpool’s success. Against Crystal Palace, Alisson was his usual dependable self, dealing with multiple crosses and making difficult saves look routine. However, his day was cut short due to a hamstring injury sustained from a seemingly innocuous kick, raising concerns about Liverpool’s ability to cope without him.

Lynch discussed the unusual nature of Alisson’s recurring hamstring issues, saying, “It’s strange for a keeper to be getting them.” He noted that this is Alisson’s fourth hamstring injury in twelve months, which suggests it could be a recurring issue that may need careful management. Lynch explained, “If you get one, you’re more susceptible to the next one,” emphasising that hamstring injuries often have a tendency to recur. This concern over Alisson’s fitness could lead to further questions about Liverpool’s options in goal as the season progresses.

While Liverpool have a capable backup in Caoimhin Kelleher, Lynch pointed out the difficulty in replacing a player of Alisson’s calibre. “Liverpool have got a very good backup… but Alisson is so, so solid,” he noted. The Brazilian’s presence in goal provides a calm assurance to Liverpool’s defence, and his ability to come off his line quickly is unmatched. Kelleher will need to step up if Alisson is sidelined, but as Lynch explained, Liverpool fans may understandably be anxious about losing their number one keeper for any extended period.

Alexis Mac Allister: Liverpool’s Midfield Engine

Another major concern is Alexis Mac Allister, who also picked up a minor injury during the game. Mac Allister has quickly established himself as a key component of Liverpool’s midfield under Slot, offering creativity, vision, and a strong defensive work rate. Lynch expressed his concerns over Mac Allister’s fitness, stating, “There’s a real risk that he goes and exacerbates it.” Lynch explained that Liverpool’s cautious decision to substitute him against Crystal Palace was a wise one, as they seek to protect him from a potential long-term injury.

Mac Allister’s injury may also impact his international duty with Argentina, adding further strain to Liverpool’s already demanding fixture schedule. Lynch pointed out that Liverpool’s midfield could become “quite thin” if Mac Allister is unavailable for an extended period. He explained, “If he gets a long-term injury, Liverpool very suddenly starts to look quite thin in central midfield.” With Liverpool’s midfield lacking the same depth as in previous seasons, losing Mac Allister could expose the team to increased pressure in crucial areas of the pitch.

Lynch added that Mac Allister’s versatility makes him difficult to replace, as he can contribute both defensively and offensively. His potential absence could lead to increased minutes for players like Curtis Jones, Endo, or even young talents like Bobby Clark. However, Lynch observed that Slot may be cautious in relying too heavily on less experienced players, especially in high-stakes matches where experience is essential.

Managing Liverpool’s Depth Amidst Injury Concerns

As Liverpool looks ahead, Slot’s ability to manage the squad’s depth will be crucial. Lynch discussed how these injuries highlight the importance of depth, especially in positions where Liverpool may be vulnerable if first-choice players are unavailable. “Liverpool are in a good position… but there is an element of fortune in keeping these key players fit,” he commented, acknowledging the need for a robust squad to navigate the demands of a title race.

While the injuries to Alisson and Mac Allister are concerning, Lynch emphasised that Liverpool is still in a strong position to compete on multiple fronts. Slot’s tactical flexibility and the squad’s resilience will be tested, but Liverpool’s early success this season suggests that they have the quality and depth to cope with adversity. As Lynch observed, “Liverpool fans will hope these injuries are minor, but the depth of this squad could be what makes the difference in the long run.”

For Liverpool supporters, Lynch’s analysis offers a balanced view of the challenges posed by these injuries. While Alisson and Mac Allister’s potential absences are certainly a setback, Slot’s leadership and Liverpool’s well-rounded squad provide reason for optimism as the club aims to build on its strong start to the season.
