Marcel Ritzmaier is a player who arrived at Oakwell with a good level of experience on his CV after taking in spells with the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsberger AC in Holland and Austria respectively.

The midfielder would however go on to take in a rather underwhelming spell with the Tykes as he only went on to feature on 22 occasions for the Yorkshire side over the course of barely two seasons.

Following the departure of his former Wolfsberger AC coach Gerhard Struber, Ritzmaier was quickly loaned out to SK Rapid Wien for the duration of the 2020/21 campaign as he didn’t feature in Valerien Ismael’s plans at Oakwell.

It was back in his homeland of Austria that he began to rediscover some form of consistency as he racked up a respectable five goals and four assists in 30 games.

This convinced SV Sandhausen of the German second division to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal during the summer just gone, thus bringing his very brief spell with Barnsley to an end.

Since moving to the Baden-Württemberg club, the 28-year-old has featured 10 times across all competitions and appears to be slowly settling into life in what is a very competitive league.

In short, he wasn’t given too much of a chance to impress for the Tykes  during his short stay with them in England and ultimately fell foul to the fact that Barnsley changed manager so frequently, which led to him being left out in the cold on more than one occasion.
