FLW take a look at Macauley Langstaff's wage compared to the Championship's top strikers.
Macauley Langstaff has struggled to adapt to life in the Championship after making his summer move from Notts County to Millwall.
Signed from the Magpies for a fee of £700,000 plus add-ons, Langstaff arrived on the back of three successive seasons netting over 28 league goals.
Handed the number nine shirt and hailed by former head coach Neil Harris as one of the most gifted finishers in the EFL, it was fair to say that he arrived at the Den with heavy expectations. Unfortunately, he has struggled to meet the standards set by those around him.
This isn't to say he won't eventually find his form, but for now, it seems that the jump up two divisions has proven to be a difficult challenge for the 28-year-old.
With this in mind, Football League World has opted to take a look at Millwall's wage expenditure on the striker and just how his weekly income compares to other strikers in the division.
Having spent most of his career in the non-league reaches of English football, the wage he now receives may seem astronomical to the striker. However, compared to most players in the second tier, he earns a relatively small figure.
Currently, the Lions' striker takes a weekly wage of £7,500, translating to an annual salary of £390,000. This figure is slightly above Millwall's average annual player salary, which stands at £376,625.
Compared to what he was earning at Notts County, this is a large advance, with his 2023-24 season wage standing at £2,000 every seven days. This means that in a year he would just topple £100,000.
According to Capology, Millwall's highest-paid players are Japhet Tanganga and Joe Bryan, with the pair taking home £35,000 and £32,500 per week respectively. In the majority, the Lions' average payout stands much below that, with most earning below £12,000 per week.
This season we haven't seen any runaway goalscorers in the Championship, but several strikers have been in decent form for their respective teams.
Among those to impress are Joel Piroe, Wilson Isidor, Josh Maja and Callum Robinson, all of whom have managed over 10 goals in the league.
Comparing their wages to Langstaff, it's evident to see that a higher wage tends to get you more goals in the second tier. The player with the highest wage on this list is actually Robinson, who earns £35,000 every seven days.
Meanwhile, one player that may surprise supporters is Piroe, whose average weekly salary is only double Langstaff's, at £15,000 per week. Given his status as one of the division’s top scorers, this seems relatively modest and stands in stark contrast to his struggling teammate Patrick Bamford, whose wage is £70,000 a week.
Josh Maja takes home £17,000 and Isidor's is certainly the most comparable to Langstaff's, with the French striker on £8,500.
The pattern that emerges here is clear: if you want goals, you’re likely going to have to pay a premium for them. Unfortunately for Langstaff, he has yet to deliver on that front. However, with players like Isidor proving that a more modest salary doesn't always equate to a lack of goals, there’s no reason why Langstaff can't turn things around and start finding the back of the net in the future.
