Josh Koroma has been tipped to depart the Terriers on one condition at the end of his contract this summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Huddersfield Town have been urged to let go of long-serving winger Josh Koroma when his contract expires at the end of this season if they are promoted to the Championship, but have been told to try and retain his services if they remain in League One for next season.
Koroma is into his sixth season as a Huddersfield player, and his impact on the starting eleven has certainly varied over the years since a 2019 move from Leyton Orient.
The versatile forward has spent time out on loan with both Rotherham United and Portsmouth in seasons gone by, but has been a key man for the Terriers in recent times, and has retained an influence on the team under Michael Duff despite their relegation to the third-tier last season.
Koroma, who is now 26-years-old, actually enjoyed his best goal-scoring campaign in his first term at the John Smith's Stadium, with eight strikes in 20 league appearances. He has struggled to reach such heights in the Championship since, however, and has clearly benefitted from the drop-down to League One this season.
He has relished the opportunities under Duff so far, and is the Terriers' joint-highest scorer in 2024/25 up to now with eight goals in 31 appearances in all competitions. Koroma has been asked to play at centre-forward more often than not, rather than his usual left-wing position, but has also played on the left of the attack and at left-wing back at times as Huddersfield look to return to the second-tier.
The Sierra Leone international's contract with the club is set to expire at the end of this season, and it seems likely that he will leave West Yorkshire in the summer, following little talk of a renewal as yet.
FLW's Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, has predicted Koroma to depart at the end of his deal in June, but only if the Terriers clinch promotion back to the Championship, with an extension mooted if Duff's men stay in League One.
"It’s really hard to say (if Josh Koroma will be a Huddersfield Town player this year or not), because he’s recently come into a bit of form, but is a player who, historically at Town, plays better when there is a contract up for renewal," Graeme told FLW.
“He dips in and out of form drastically. He’s very inconsistent, and can therefore be one of our most frustrating players, because we know what he is capable of, but he delivers it infrequently. Very, very frustrating.
“I think if we don’t secure promotion, he is someone we should try to keep, but if we do, then we should consider letting him go. I don’t think he is a Championship player.
“I think it depends on what division we’re in next year, and that is going to mean that it gets later and later before we are able to make that (contract) decision.
“I don’t have any problems with him as a player on a personal level; I just find him woefully inconsistent.
“Like I say, he seems to play better when his future is on the line. You shouldn’t really need that situation to be in place for someone to play their best football."
Huddersfield's chances of sealing an automatic promotion back to the Championship look slim as it stands, with the club sitting in fifth place and nine points off Wycombe Wanderers in second spot, but they could well finish in the play-offs and go up that way, which Koroma is bound to have a huge helping hand in, if so.
It is pretty clear that he is a good player in the third-tier who is also capable of impressing in the second-tier, and if previous reports are to be believed, he will not be short of offers from different clubs in the summer even if he renews in West Yorkshire.
Transfer journalist Darren Witcoop revealed last month, via X, that the versatile forward had Championship and League One admirers, and that Town were set to face a fight to keep hold of him in the January window.
He did remain at the club past the deadline, but it seems likely that those interested parties could return for a move in the summer, especially if he keeps up his current form, which has seen him net twice in his last four league appearances.
Koroma is clearly a talent, but it may serve both him and Huddersfield best if he moves on with best wishes in June. It can often benefit a player to have a fresh start and a clean slate at a new club, which he may well want, particularly given that he has spent six years with the Terriers and should soon be entering his prime at 26-years-old.
