As the January transfer window continues to press on, West Brom have been rumoured to be making their first outgoing of the new year.

The senior figure linked with a move away from the Black Country is club captain Jed Wallace, who has significantly struggled to break into the first team picture this campaign, being kept out by the ever-impressive Tom Fellows on the right flank.

Former Millwall man Wallace arrived to B71 from the Lions on a free transfer back in the summer of 2022, netting six times and recording eight assists in his debut season.

In the following year under Carlos Corberan, the 30-year-old would secure the same number of goals with five assists from 42 matches as the Baggies were edged out in the play-offs by eventual winners Southampton.

This season so far has seen a complete tail off in form, with Wallace failing to record a single attacking contribution from 20 matches, coinciding with links of a move away from the club.

As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Blackburn are eyeing up a move for experienced Crystal Palace man Jeffrey Schlupp, but view Wallace as an alternative target if the move can’t be agreed. Meanwhile, Wallace’s former employers Portsmouth are keen on a reunion.

West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess has spoken exclusively to Football League World, detailing his thoughts on a potential Jed Wallace exit and whether the move will suit Blackburn’s playing style under John Eustace.

Burgess said: “I personally think it’s best for Jed Wallace to move on in January. After his first few months after arriving at The Hawthorns, he looked a great signing who was performing relatively well, but since then there has been a drop-off in his current form and Tom Fellows has more than made that right wing his own, and with him still at the club, I can’t see Wallace getting consistent minutes at Albion any time soon.

“He has been a club captain and a great character to have around the club, so you would imagine he would be on high wages making the move to Blackburn, while in terms of a transfer fee, you won’t be looking at more than £1.5 million, but in Albion’s case it will be more about getting the wages off the books.

“For Blackburn, he would probably fit John Eustace’s style of play, competing for minutes with the likes of Thyrhys Dolan and Ryan Hedges on the right wing, while Andi Weimann, who was at The Hawthorns last season, has performed fairly well, so it seems like Ewood Park could be the place for Wallace to start getting his career back on track and getting consistent game time when he can.”

Jed Wallace exit will suit all parties

It does make logical sense for Albion to move on from Wallace, who has been on a steep decline in a blue and white shirt this season.

Despite impressing originally, the attacking output simply hasn’t been good enough for a promotion-contending side, and it feels that a new environment may be just what is needed to see him replicate his past heroics in the Championship.

With Wallace likely to be a high earner, the Baggies can’t afford to have a player in the squad taking up such a high chunk of the budget while not producing on the pitch, and Albion may benefit from using the spare funds from Wallace’s departure in bringing in a younger and hungrier prospect to help compete with Tom Fellows for a starting spot.
