Mikel Arteta was left “absolutely fuming” with referee Michael Oliver’s decision to send off defender Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolves.

The teenager stopped a Wolves counter attack and despite the incident taking place just outside of the Wolves penalty area, the referee felt it was worth a straight red card.

Arsenal were a man light for the majority of the second half but rallied to earn a vital three points at Molineux as Riccardo Calafiori struck home the winner.

Arteta didn’t hold back in his feelings regarding the incident and believes Arsenal might not even have to worry about appealing the decision and having the red card overturned.

“It is that clear that I leave it to you guys,” he said post match.

“I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.”

On whether Arsenal will launch an immediate appeal, Arteta added: “That’s for the club to decide what the best decision is. I think it’s that obvious, maybe we don’t even need to.”

Arteta praised Arsenal’s character in coming through adversity to earn a valuable victory.

“It’s incredible what the boys did again,” he continued.

“In the context that we were thrown in again, it was about character, personality of the team, courage and intelligence to play the game we wanted to play. It was exceptional.”
