Gareth Southgate has reportedly been in the running as a potential candidate to succeed Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.

Southgate would be the most unpopular choice, especially if INEOS consider how fans feel about the situation.

The horrible thought of Southgate becoming United manager eased this morning as the former England boss announced he will not return to coaching within the next year.

Southgate left his role as England manager after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The links to United emerged in the summer before Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team gave Ten Hag a one-year contract extension. A poor start to the 2024/25 season led to further speculation.

United’s hierarchy met for a routine meeting in London on Tuesday. The media suggested Ten Hag’s future was on the agenda in the seven-hour congregation.

Speaking at a European Club Association event in Athens, Southgate distanced himself from the United job.

“I won’t coach in the next year, for sure. I’m certain of that,” Southgate said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.”

Gareth Southgate’s announcement comes with relief

It’s no secret that Southgate has close links to INEOS.

The former Middlesbrough manager also has ties to Dan Ashworth from their work with the FA.

One member of the hierarchy who has strong admiration for Southgate is David Brailsford, though it remains to be seen how much of an influence the cycling expert will have at the biggest football club in the world. It’s something we will be keeping an eye on.

At club level, Southgate’s record isn’t very impressive and everybody knows the international football is different gravy altogether.

It would be an extremely underwhelming appointment if Southgate was made United manager. Desperation.

Southgate’s announcement should put the rumours to bed.
