Paulo Fonseca was unveiled as the new Olympique Lyonnais head coach on Friday, replacing Frenchman Pierre Sage with the side currently sat 6th in Ligue 1 and through to the elimination phase of the Europa League. The former LOSC head coach outlined his expectations for the rest of the season with Les Gones in a press conference transcribed by OL’s club website. “I’m here because president John Textor has confidence in my work, but also because I believe enormously in the quality of our players,” began the Portuguese coach. “I think we have what it takes to improve their performances. I like to dominate games, and I believe we have the players to adopt an attacking philosophy, while having a solid defensive organisation. I’m very ambitious and convinced of this team’s potential.”

“You have to understand and deal with the current situation,” explained Fonseca. “Pierre has done an excellent job so far, and we have to recognise that while taking into account the expectations of the fans. We’re entering a new phase that I think the fans will understand. I know the atmosphere here; I’ve played four times in Lyon and yesterday I saw just how passionate the fans are. It will be vital to be able to count on their support.”The Portuguese tactician is officially back in Ligue 1 only months after leaving the French top-tier upon the expiry of his Lille contract last summer. Fonseca spent two seasons with Les Dogues and made them a consistent Ligue 1 side that is now thriving in the Champions League under Bruno Génésio. Fonseca was a free agent after an ill-fated stint as AC Milan manager. The 51-year-old has been dismissed by the Rossoneri in late December.GFFN | George Boxall
