Inter Milan loanee Francesco Pio Esposito has outlined his ambitions after propelling Spezia to third in the Serie B standings.
During his recent interview with FCInterNews, the 19-year-old admitted he aims to help the Aquilotti return to Serie A.
Esposito has soaked up the limelight as Spezia’s standout performer this season.
Despite his young age, he has almost single-handedly carried Luca D’Angelo’s side to the promotion battle.
Indeed, with 11 goals, he’s the division’s most prolific player.
Following a three-game scoring drought, Esposito bagged a brace in a 4-0 demolition of Carrarese last weekend.
His game-winning performance saw him leapfrog Cristian Shpendi and Pietro Iemmello in Serie B’s scoring leaderboard.
But Esposito can’t afford to rest on his laurels.
D’Angelo’s men still trail second-placed Pisa by five points and must overhaul that gap to secure direct promotion.
Otherwise, they’ll need to navigate the dreaded playoffs.
Whether he’ll ever have a chance to prove himself to Simone Inzaghi remains debatable.
However, he’ll be well-advised to enjoy the moment.
And in all fairness, this is Esposito’s moment.
“Reaching the tenth goal had weighed on me a bit, especially in the matches against Mantova and Juve Stabia,” he said.
“I think this is a real demonstration of my growth compared to last year.
“In a situation like this, I would have let the disappointment get to me, but this year there’s no time for that.
“The goal is to bring Spezia back to where it deserves to be, and today’s performance was my response.”
Esposito then assessed his growth in Liguria.
“Even within the squad, I don’t see myself as just a kid anymore,” he added.
“Last year, I played 40 matches, and I believe I can take on my responsibilities.
“I’m proud of the progress we’re making, both individually and as a team, but above all.
“I always keep in mind the choice to return to Spezia despite having other opportunities.”
