Creating chances galore but failing to put them to bed has been the story of the new season for Manchester United and that once again proved to be the case against Crystal Palace.
In the first-half of the encounter at Selhurst Park, the Red Devils had nine shots but either the crossbar or Dean Henderson stood in their way.
Despite scoring 10 goals in the two games leading up to the Palace encounter, the 20-time English league champions have missed the most big chances in the league this term among all the teams.
And the missed two points means the Old Trafford side remain outside the top-10 and have only two wins in the league out of five games.
The pressure remains firmly on Erik ten Hag and despite improvements in controlling possession, it is results that will ultimately matter to INEOS.
They took the decision to retain the Dutchman after an end-of-season review and backed him heavily with signings and if the former Ajax coach is not able to spark a turnaround soon, things could get dicey for him.
Up next is United’s opening Europa League tie followed by two huge league games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, both top-four rivals and those games could actually paint the picture as to where the team stands currently.
There have been murmurs of the new co-owners looking at Max Allegri, formerly of Juventus, and Inter Live have now stated that hugely successful Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi could be INEOS’ preferred choice to take over next.
Under his tutelage, the Nerazzurri won the Serie A last year and even made it to the Champions League final a couple of seasons ago.
A few days back, they held Manchester City to a 0-0 draw away at the Etihad and arguably, could have even come away with all three points from the contest.
His current Inter deal is valid until 2026 but if the Old Trafford side come calling, it would be difficult for Inzaghi to turn down the opportunity.
“The eyes of one of the richest and most important clubs in the world on Simone Inzaghi: watch out for his farewell in the summer of 2025.
“And Manchester United is a train that is very difficult to refuse. The ‘Red Devils’ do not have much faith in Erik ten Hag. At this point his farewell to Old Trafford seems almost a given: there will be a revolution, yet another in Manchester. And at the center of it all could be the Inter coach.
“Inzaghi is very much liked by the top brass at Manchester United and he could take Ten Hag’s place. Inzaghi’s will and Inter’s position of strength, which has signed him for another two years, will be decisive.”
He has transformed Inter’s fortunes on the pitch and really gets a tune out of the players and if Inter conjure up another successful season, his future could lie away from Milan.
Ten Hag needs to buck up and get his team firing or INEOS seem to have a replacement ready.
