Inter will have to wait until the end of the weekend, or possibly until the start of next week to understand the full impact of captain Lautaro Martinez’s injury after he withdrew from the Argentina national team squad on Wednesday.

El Toro will soon be on his way back to Italy after a brief trip over to South America, where he had been due to take part in World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil over the coming week.

However, he was sent home for further medical treatment after reporting a hamstring injury, which has turned out to be worse than originally feared.

There had initially been hopes that Martinez would be allowed to stay on with the Argentina national team, but follow-up reports suggest that he is now expected to miss several weeks’ worth of action.

It remains to be seen whether the medicals will be carried out at the weekend or on Monday morning.

Either way, El Toro is not expected to be back in time to face Udinese in Serie A after the end of the international break, nor for the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against rivals Milan on the Wednesday immediately afterwards.
