Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi is a “serious contender” to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager should the Dutchman get the sack.
Ten Hag is widely thought to be on borrowed time after his team slumped to a shambolic 0-3 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
It was more than just a bad result, with the lifeless display from the players pointing to a lack of belief in their leader.
And according to the Daily Star, Inzaghi has “emerged as a serious contender” to jump into the Old Trafford hotseat should it become available.
The Italian has won five trophies with the Nerazzurri since taking over the reigns in 2021, including a resounding Serie A title last season.
Inzaghi, whose side currently sit in fourth place after six matches, would not be an easy option for United bosses having signed a new deal with Inter earlier this year.
But he would be a statement acquisition for the club, having won the league title by 19 points last season while also taking Inter to their first Champions League final in 13 years the season before, where they lost 0-1 to Manchester City in Istanbul.
Inzaghi’s Inter shipped just 22 goals in Serie A last season, compared to United’s dismal 58, pointing to the 48-year-old’s well-oiled defensive structure.
But according to the report, he “would be encouraged to introduce a more attacking style to his management if he was to take charge of United”.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reluctant to pull the trigger on Ten Hag already, less than three months after extending his contract to 2026, but United’s alarming form is making the decision look inevitable.
Ratcliffe and the rest of the United top brass are thought to be waiting until the next international break, just under a fortnight away, to make a call on the manager’s position.
Before then, Ten Hag takes his men to Portugal for a Europa League clash with Porto, and to Birmingham to face Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Should Inzaghi prove out of United’s reach, other candidates to take over as manager include Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter.
