Winning a league title is always a fantastic achievement. However, doing it without losing a single game turns an excellent team into an iconic one.

Last season, Bayer Leverkusen won a maiden German title while going undefeated, becoming the first Bundesliga ‘Invincibles’ in the process. This time around, there’s a clutch of teams looking to emulate that feat and end the season as champions without a loss.

Here are four teams closing in on unbeaten seasons.

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain’s domestic dominance is showing no sign of coming to an end. Since winning their first Ligue 1 title under their Qatari ownership in 2011, the Parisians have won 10 of the last 12 titles in France.

Despite losing record scorer Kylian Mbappe in the summer, PSG have raised their level even higher in a more cohesive unit under Luis Enrique. PSG are unbeaten after 26 games, winning 21, and have opened up a 19-point lead over nearest challengers Marseille. The capital club are the league’s highest scorers, have conceded the fewest goals, and have impressed in Europe to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

No French side has ever completed a top-flight campaign unbeaten, but PSG are just eight games from immortality.

Galatasaray

Galatasaray edged out Fenerbahce in a Turkish title race for the ages last season. Both sides recorded record points totals, with Galatasaray taking the title with 102 points won.

The Istanbul outfit supercharged their side with the signing of Victor Osimhen on loan from Napoli in the summer and lead the Süper Lig by nine points from their eternal rivals.

Osimhen is the league’s leading scorer for a Galatasaray side who are unbeaten after 27 games, with nine to go. It’s been a remarkable campaign for the club, whose season started with a shock 5-0 defeat to Besiktas in the Turkish Super Cup.

There have been two instances of unbeaten Turkish Süper Lig seasons before. Galatasaray first achieved the feat in 1985/96, before Besiktas matched the achievement in 1991/92.

Incredibly, Galatasaray’s first unbeaten season did not end up with title success. The club missed out to Besiktas on goal difference after drawing 16 of their 36 league games.

Red Star Belgrade

Red Star Belgrade are in pursuit of an eighth consecutive Serbian league title, as the capital club look to extend their record as the nation’s most successful outfit.

Vladan Milojević’s side are 21 points clear of Partizan Belgrade having won 26 and drawn two of their 28 games. There are just two more games to go until the split for the Championship Round, where Red Star will take on each of the current top eight sides once more before the season concludes. Red Star could be crowned champions before the Championship Round if results go in their favour.

It would be the fifth time a Serbian side has completed a campaign unbeaten. Three of the previous four occasions were from Red Star, who achieved the feat in 2007/08, 2020/21 and 2022/23. The first of those saw the side miss out on the title to Partizan.

Chelsea Women

Chelsea are closing in on a sixth straight Women’s Super League title after a stunning season under new head coach Sonia Bompastor. The exit of Emma Hayes has not hindered the WSL’s dominant force, who are eight points clear of Arsenal and unbeaten after 17 games. An Invincible season is not unusual in the WSL and has been completed 11 times previously.

Arsenal completed seven undefeated seasons between 1994/95 and 2007/08, including an astonishing 2006/07 that saw the Gunners win all 22 league games, scoring 119 goals, and add the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League to their WSL title in a quadruple.

Croydon (now Charlton Athletic) also went unbeaten in 1995/96 and 1998/99, while Chelsea accomplished the feat in 2017/18 and 2019/20.
