‘It’s better to forget’ – Bamo Meïté addresses witnessing Marseille teammates being shot at in attempted carjacking | OneFootball

In the early hours of the morning after the final game of the season, two Olympique de Marseille players were subject to a failed car-jacking.

At around 3:30 a.m., Jean Onana (24) and Faris Moumbagna (23) attempted to return home en route from the Marseille training centre when they were targeted by the attackers. The two players were shot at as they made their escape but managed to flee unharmed from the scene with the only damage being to their cars, which were left with bullet holes on the trunk and driver-side door.

Bamo Meïté witnessed the events unfold but was not targeted in the attack. Regardless, it was a situation that left the Ivorian defender shaken, and reluctant to discuss the morning in question when interviewed by Le Parisien. “It’s better to forget and try to move forward I think…”

“Now I’m on holiday, I’m trying to clear my mind,” Meïté continued, “Between my injury and the incident that occurred, it’s been an eventful year.” The defender opened up further, “It was a shocking scene, I was scared, that’s obvious. Now, today, I’m trying to step back from this situation. We are top athletes, we should not be involved in this kind of thing. I don’t want to talk about it too much, even to those close to me.”

The incident has not put a dampener on Meïté’s time at the club, and despite his season-long loan from FC Lorient ending, the defender considers his future being in Marseille. “What happened was outside of football. Sportingly, my love for the club has not weakened.
