Southampton boss Ivan Juric isn't bothered much about Southampton's relegation fears. A big reason behind the Croatian's optimistic approach is that he successfully navigated a similar scenario at Genoa earlier.
Ever since the season began, Southampton were tipped to spend a good amount of weeks in the relegation zone. Honestly, that wasn't a downplaying prediction given that promoted newcomers take time to acclimate to the Premier League standards.
Still, remaining bottom for half a season delivers a big blow to the Premier League aspirations. Now, add widespread criticisms from legends and journalists whose remarks don't do any good to the squad's confidence.
Be it any player, fan or manager, improving the results from now seems next to impossible. Still, Ivan Juric is a seasoned expert who knows how to correctly handle any losing battle.
The reason is that he comes from Italian football where struggles and challenges are an everpresent sight at every bottom table club. That being said, Juric's firsthand experience has been no different either.
Though he managed elite clubs like Roma and Torino, his rise to fame came at a relegation threatened Genoa team. Nearly a decade ago, Juric was handed a similar responsibility to ensure Genoa's top flight status and the former passed with flying colours.
Refreshing those memories, Juric spoke to the Daily Echo: "Like in this situation, I never was before. But in Genoa, I had one year that we were fighting for relegation and we stayed in the Serie A."
Hearing Juric's calm opinion, one can point out many differences between that Genoa and the Saints squad. Still, positivity and hardwork remain the way for Southampton with star players leading as an example in this regard.
