Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly trying to sign a new striker in the January transfer window and are keen to bring Mathys Tel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
According to ESPN, Tottenham have made an offer of €60 million (£50.21 million) for Tel.
Bayern have accepted that bid and are ready to sell the 19-year-old forward to Spurs.
Tel himself is ready to leave the German giants and wants to find a club where he would play regularly.
ESPN, though, has reported that Tel has not yet made a decision on whether to make the move to Tottenham. Personal terms have not yet been agreed.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are also reportedly interested in Tel, while Aston Villa eye the teenager as a potential replacement for the departing Jhon Duran.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp was on Sky Sports News on Thursday evening.
The pundit revealed what former Spurs striker Harry Kane told him about Tel via a text message, with the England international being teammates with the Frenchman at Bayern.
Redknapp told Sky Sports about Tel: “He [Tel] is a very talented player, that’s for sure. He’s 19 and Tottenham have signed a lot of good young players in the last few years. That seems to be the profile of what they are trying to get.
“I messaged Harry Kane earlier on just asking what he’s like as I knew I was coming to speak to you guys and he was very complimentary about him. First of all, he says he’s a great guy. He wants to work, good trainer, good finisher, lot of potential.”
The former Spurs star also gave his verdict on a potential deal.
Redknapp said: “It’s a lot of money, £50 million, for a 19-year-old in the current climate. I can’t think of too many that age that have gone for much more.
“He has a lot of talent and can play off the left as well – and they have got a lot of big games coming up.
“Coming to Tottenham, would he start? There’s still Son, there’s still Kulusevski, there’s still Solanke when he’s fit, so there’s probably not a guarantee he’s going to come in as a regular starter, but trying to get ahead of Kane at Bayern is not easy.”
Tel is a very good and promising young forward. Bayern would not have signed the striker in 2022 otherwise.
However, one has to wonder why Bayern are ready to cash in on the striker when he is only 19 now.
True, Kane is a goal machine, but if the German giants felt that they have a future superstar on their hands, then they would not be so keen on offloading him.
Tottenham should not pay £50m for a teenager. True, Spurs could do with a top-quality striker, but the North London club need someone who would be able to make an immediate impact.
Tel has given one assist in 14 matches in all competitions for Bayern this season and scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 41 appearances in 2023-24.
