Ipswich Town midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento has hailed his team for their perseverance, posting on X after his side's 3-2 victory against Southampton.

Coming into this game, the Tractor Boys were in desperate need of a win, with Leicester City winning earlier in the day and Leeds United playing shortly after the game in Suffolk finished.

And they made the best possible start, with Leif Davis firing the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at Portman Road.

However, the Saints hit back quickly, with Che Adams equalising not long after.

Unlike the Tractor Boys, the visitors were able to build on their goal, going 2-1 up and capitalising on Ipswich's defensive weaknesses down their left-hand side.

Kieran McKenna's side mounted a great response in the second half though, with Nathan Broadhead equalising.

Late on in the game, Davis looked to be through on goal, but James Bree pulled him back and was sent off for what the referee saw as denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Despite this dismissal, the Saints continued to push forward, but that proved to be costly in the end with Sarmiento scoring in the 97th minute to all but end the away side's automatic promotion hopes.

The Tractor Boys, meanwhile, are currently sitting at the top of the Championship table and are in a strong position to push on now.

There's still time for the likes of Leeds and Leicester to overtake them, with the latter having a game in hand, but McKenna's side keep putting points on the board and that can only be a good thing for them.

No one will be more pleased than Sarmiento, who came on for Conor Chaplin during the latter stages of the game and registered a crucial winner for the promotion contenders.

Ipswich seem to have a knack of scoring late, vital goals and that could help them to secure back-to-back promotions.

Ipswich Town have a promising trait that could earn them promotion

As mentioned above, Ipswich keep scoring late goals.

That can be a real psychological advantage for the Tractor Boys if they aren't winning a game during the latter stages.

It can also allow them to strike fear into their opponents, who will know that McKenna's side won't give up and can strike at any time.

It's a great trait to have and it will be much-needed in their quest to battle against the likes of Leeds and Leicester, both of whom arguably have better squads and are better equipped to go up.

McKenna's side are finding ways to win games though and following their wobble earlier this year, they are firmly back on track and are real contenders for a top-two place now.
