Kicker reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker Jonas Hofmann is to join Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
Hofmann reportedly has a release clause in his contract, the 30-year-old extended his contract last year until 2025 which inserted the clause, which is said to be worth €10m. Gladbach even tried to extend Hofmann’s contract until 2026 to try and remove the clause but Hofmann has decided to move to Leverkusen. Hofmann joined Gladbach in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund for €8m.
Gladbach have prepared for the possible departure with Stade Brest’s Franck Honorat the player tipped to replace the 30-year-old.
The departure of Hofmann is another blow to Gladbach as they continue to rebuild their squad after Marcus Thuram, Ramy Bensebaini and Lars Stindl have all left the club this summer. Hofmann was one of Gladbach’s stand-out players last season, the 30-year-old scored 14 and assisted 12 in 33 games as Gladbach finished 10th.
The money from Hofmann’s departure will likely be reinvested into new players. Gladbach have already completed the signings of Lukas Ullrich, Grant-Leon Ranos, Robin Hack and Fabio Chiarodia whilst also making the loan of Julian Weigl permanent.
