As reported by Bild, Jonas Omlin’s stats against Mainz 05 highlights the issues at Borussia Mönchengladbach. After beating Bayern Munich 3-2 the week before, Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke wanted to see more of the same against Mainz.

Speaking on the evening of the game, Farke said: “We showed a high level of willingness to run, a lot of intensity and strength in tackles against Bayern – these virtues will also be important. Mainz are one of the most intensive teams in the league, no other team has more sprints in possession and always delivers a lot in all areas of running. We have to accept this way, counteract it and be very present.”

However, Gladbach were played off the park and hammered 4-0, almost minoring their match before Bayern when they lost 4-1 to Hertha Berlin.

In terms of statistics, the starkest stat was that goalkeeper Jonas Omlin was Gladbach’s third-fastest player in the entire game. Only Jonas Hofmann (32.3 km/h) and Ko Itakura (31.8 km/h) achieved a higher pace than Omlin’s 31.4 km/h. What’s more, Gladbach ran 9km less than their opponents. It’s a damming stat which is almost hard to believe. When a goalkeeper is running faster than 8 outfield players, you have big problems.

With just two wins in their previous five Bundesliga matches, Gladbach are languishing in 10th with no real chance of achieving European football next season. In recent weeks, there has been speculation that Farke’s time as head coach could be coming to an end.
