The veteran Premier League player Jordan Ayew has not seen as much playing time as he would have liked with Leicester as of late. During City's 2-0 win over Southampton, the 33-year-old found. The Ghanaian forward took the free kick that saw his initial effort ricochet off the wall.
Alert, however, he took the rebound and smashed it into the back of the net to provide the needed cushion to ensure a victory for the Foxes on Saturday. Although it's a lost season, moments like that show what is left to play for individually. The effort also demonstrated collectively what can happen as LCFC put together a strong home performance at King Power Stadium for supporters.
Some make the correct claim of Ruud van Nistelrooy needing to focus on the young players given the situation that the club finds itself in. Even with Jamie Vardy and Ayew starting against the Saints, the manager still found a way to give appearances to some of the younger talents on the squad.
RvN needs to continue to find that right balance. This isn't about getting points or anything of that sort anymore. And playing for pride is something that needs to happen regardless, but that is not the aim at this moment for The Foxes. Instead, the latest EPL win showed what can happen when this City side plays against a lower level of competition and can play within themselves.
Someone like Ayew has not received the run time that he would have liked. Efforts like what City fans saw on Saturday may give a case that he should have played a little bit more when the season was still in the balance.
Regardless of that aspect, depending on the players who potentially exit on their own or leave, he made a good case for himself to continue to garner more minutes on the pitch. And even if he is one of the pieces who end up having to depart the East Midlands side, getting another performance like what he gave against Southampton could raise that asking price for his services. After all, it's often the last impression that is strongest during these types of negotiations.
