Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has offered a message of encouragement to current boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has endured a dismal start to his Manchester United career, losing in the Europa League final to Tottenham and finishing 15th in the Premier League.

But drawing on his own experience early in his managerial career, Mourinho suggested Amorim can turn things around if he receives the backing and support.

“I’ve read some quotes from him [Amorim] saying that he is happy that he came and had already these six months,” Mourinho old Sky Sports News.

“When I went to Porto the same happened to me. I went in January [2002], I had a difficult six months. We were struggling even to qualify for UEFA Cup and then it happened, what happened.”

Mourinho also spent 17 months in charge at Spurs, guiding them to a Carabao Cup final but being sacked before the game.

And while he admitted he was torn between the two sides while watching the game, he says seeing Heung-min Son win a trophy was heartwarming.

“The impact is obvious, Tottenham plays Champions League and of course for Mr Levy, the millions that the Champions League gives for him is the best news. For the fans, for the players, for Ange, it’s a title,” Mourinho said.

“Yes the game was not amazing, they made history for Tottenham because Tottenham didn’t have a trophy for many years. The impact on Manchester United of course is huge for how many years Manchester United is not involved in any European competition.

“But at the same time, it looks like they’re supporting Ruben, they’re giving him time and conditions to move forward. I was divided because on one side I love United, but on the other side when I saw Sonny crying with the cup and also for Tottenham fans it has a special feeling.”
