Not seeing more of the Bellingham brothers at Birmingham is likely a regret only heightened in moments like this

Jude Bellingham’s rise from Birmingham City to Real Madrid and England regular is nothing short of spectacular.

His brother, Jobe, is also making waves in the Championship with Sunderland, leading to Not The Top 20 Podcast to tip the younger Bellingham to also make his way into the squad.

Having produced the pair, the Blues will be proud of their academy system.

But watching them shine elsewhere is bound to be tinged with a slight regret that they haven’t seen more of the brothers they were so instrumental in producing.

Jobe is kicking on this season for Sunderland

Having a brother rise as seismically as Jude did won’t have made it any easier for Jobe, but he is starting to make a name for himself in his own right.

He has started all 12 of Sunderland’s opening Championship games of the 2024/25 season, a campaign that has seen them shock the rest of the division by establishing themselves as early frontrunners.

He’s managed to pick up two important goals against Derby County and Oxford United, plus an assist on the opening day against Cardiff City.

Having established himself at the Stadium of Light the season before, making 45 appearances and scoring seven goals, this campaign is a big one as Jobe attempts to take it one step further.

And he’s started brilliantly, meaning that NTT20 Pod’s prediction is not all that outlandish.

Jude was never likely to stick in Birmingham for long

It wouldn’t be realistic for Birmingham fans to expect to hold onto a player like Jude, given what he has gone on to do despite still only being 21 years old — there was never going to be any keeping him down.

It is likely a strong source of pride to see a local lad, with strong ties to Birmingham, become of the biggest names in football.

Jobe, however, may be a slightly different case.

Ask any player whether they’d rather sign for Borussia Dortmund or Birmingham, and it’ll be a tough fight for the St. Andrew’s side.

But the margins between Sunderland and the Blues, division rivals at the time of the sale, are less so; you’d think being raised in Stourbridge would tip the balance in favour of Birmingham, but for a fee reportedly less than £3million, Jobe was on his way to the North East.

Blues fans will regret not seeing more of the brothers

Although it turned out to be a strong decision from Jobe, who’s now chasing down Premier League football as Birmingham battle it out in League One, it feels like some better persuasion last summer could have kept him in the Midlands.

With Jude’s 44 appearances and Jobe’s 26 outings, Blues fans got to see the pair in their club’s colours just 70 times combined for the senior side.

Now, Sunderland fans will be lapping up the links to one of their players making it to the top level, while Blues fans can only watch from afar, no doubt feeling some level of envy.

Blues fans will be happy their club played a prominent role in producing two exciting footballers, but they will surely hold some regrets that they didn’t get to see the benefits on the pitch for longer.
