Now that Chelsea have got back on track a little, Manchester United have reclaimed their title as the Premier League’s top “Big Club Basket Case.”

After a massive ownership tussle which saw the sporting side of the business turned over to INEOS, the sweeping changes at the top led to struggling manager Erik Ten Hag…. being kept as manager, improbably. Their summer signings don’t look to have improved things too much. Manuel Ugarte can’t even get on the pitch.

One problem position for them has been left back, where Luke Shaw’s eternal injury problems continue to confound United’s doctors. They’re looking for a solution, and Chelsea can offer one in the form of their own injury prone England international. But they’re not the only interested teams.

Ben Chilwell lines up potential moves

After struggling for a few years, Ben Chilwell has got himself fit, just in time to find out he’s not wanted at Chelsea anymore. Apart from a brief EFL Cup cameo, he’s not been seen on the pitch, and manager Enzo Maresca has been very clear that he’s got no interest in keeping him.

Attempts to move him in the summer failed, but January could see a new push. He’s 27, he’s got England caps, he’s played well in the Premier League and won the Champions League. United want a boost in morale and a body at left back. Chelsea are likely to let him go for a very low price.

His wages are high and could be an issue, but spending this months on the bench might persuade him to lower his demands if it means a move to an undeniably massive team, no matter their basket case status.

TeamTalk claim the move is on – and even that Atletico Madrid and Juventus are circling.

Things might yet work out OK for poor Chilly, despite these unpleasant few months.
