The international break is always a worrying time for club football fans, who do not want to see their players pick up any injuries while away with their national teams. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent that from happening on some occasions. And it looks like Celtic will be sweating the fitness of one of their regular starters.
It has been an eventful international break for many teams. Denmark is one of them. They won the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final tie against Portugal by a 1-0 scoreline, only to lose 5-2 in the return fixture.
It is not the result that Celtic fans will be worried about. The fitness status of Kasper Schmeichel coming out of the game has left many sweating though.
As reported by The National, Schmeichel was in clear discomfort due to a problem with his left arm during extra-time of Denmark's match against Portugal. The Celtic goalkeeper appeared to suffer the injury from his efforts to deny Jota as he clutched his arm before receiving treatment. He bravely played on for his team and even turned a strike over the bar in extra-time but then could be heard screaming in pain as he landed on the turf.
Of course, Schmeichel deserves a lot of credit for bravely playing on when his team needed him. That being said, it might not be good news for Celtic.
Celtic need Schmeichel over the last few months of this season. They still need to get over the finish line in the league and have the Scottish Cup to play for as well.
Unfortunately, if Schmeichel's issue turns out to be anything serious then the Hoops will have to look elsewhere. And it is very clear that they do not have someone of his quality right now.
