Yokohama F. Marinos will begin life under interim manager Patrick Kisnorbo when they travel to face in-form Urawa Reds at Saitama Stadium on Sunday, with the visitors desperate to arrest an alarming slide down the J1 League table.
The three-time J1 League champions sacked head coach Steve Holland on Friday following a disastrous run that has left them languishing in 18th place. The final straw came after their 3-2 home defeat to Shimizu S-Pulse, where Marinos remarkably squandered a two-goal lead.
Australian Kisnorbo, who previously served as Holland's assistant and holds a UEFA Pro License, faces a baptism of fire against an Urawa side who have won their last two matches and are pushing for honours near the top of the table.
"It's a difficult situation but also an opportunity," said Kisnorbo in his first press conference. "We need to focus on getting the basics right and rebuilding confidence within the squad."
The contrast between the two sides could hardly be starker. While Marinos have managed just one win in their last eleven league matches, Urawa come into this fixture having secured back-to-back victories against Kyoto Sanga and Machida Zelvia.
Urawa's recent 2-1 win over Kyoto showcased their clinical edge, with goals from Yusuke Matsuo and Ryoma Watanabe proving decisive despite having less possession than their opponents.
Maciej Skorża's side have successfully integrated several new signings, with Brazilian midfielder Matheus Sávio particularly impressive since his January arrival from Kashiwa Reysol. The creative midfielder has formed an effective partnership with Samuel Gustafson in the engine room.
Yokohama's problems are compounded by injury concerns. Captain Takuya Kida remains sidelined after picking up an injury in their AFC Champions League Elite match against Shanghai Shenhua, while midfielder Takuto Kimura is a long-term absentee with an ACL injury.
Urawa have their own selection issues, with Brazilian forward Thiago Santana still unavailable, though Matsuo has proven an effective replacement in a more advanced role.
The match coincides with Urawa's "Akaharu" (Red Spring) fan event at Saitama Stadium, featuring family activities and appearances from former Japan internationals. A sell-out crowd is expected, adding to the challenge facing Kisnorbo's men.
Despite their domestic struggles, Marinos have advanced to the AFC Champions League Elite quarterfinals where they will face Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr next week. This fixture against Urawa represents a crucial opportunity to build momentum ahead of that continental showdown.
Urawa's home advantage, superior form, and the stability of their squad make them clear favourites against a Marinos side in disarray. The visitors' defensive frailties – having conceded in each of their last six matches – are likely to be exposed by Urawa's clinical attack.
Kisnorbo may provide a new-manager bounce, but transforming Marinos' fortunes will require more than just a change in the dugout. Expect Urawa to control proceedings and claim a comfortable victory in front of their festive home support.
Predicted Score: Urawa 2-0 Yokohama F. Marinos
