Bayern Munich suffered an injury blow in their 1-1 draw with Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday as star striker Harry Kane was forced off at half-time with a calf problem.
Kane himself said after the game that he didn't know if he'd be ready to play against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, and Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was unable to give a more precise diagnosis at the post-match press conference.
"It's a bit of a shame that Harry is out, but I can't say for how long or what his problem is," said Kompany.
He added that Kane "didn't feel a tear or a pull" and that it was more of a "feeling".
"During the game he didn't feel he could help the team at full strength. That's why we didn't want to take any extra risks," Kompany continued, explaining the substitution.
Although Kane missed the final training session before the game, Kompany insisted the England international didn't pick up the injury in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
"It wasn't an injury from the weekend," said the Belgian coach.
“It's normal to need an extra day to recover after so many games in such a short time, especially after the second one.”
Bayern are now awaiting a scan to determine the severity of the injury.
Kompany also commented on Bayern's performance in the 1-1 draw against Celtic, which they had to fight hard for.
A late equaliser from Alphonso Davies secured a 3-2 aggregate victory and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
“We had a lot of chances in the second half where we could’ve scored two or three goals. But in the end, we needed that goal from ‘Phonzy’. Nevertheless, you have to look at it in context - we have put in an enormous amount of energy over the last six days. Now, we have an eight-point lead in the league, are one round further in this competition and have a little more time to recuperate," said Kompany.
“Of course, we want to beat our opponents by as large a margin as possible, but if that doesn’t work, then you have to work hard for the results. That’s exactly what we’ve done, and in the end, what counts is that we’ve gone through. You also learn a lot about our mentality – and that’s a part of it. We’re looking to playing in the next round.”
