The striker came close but could not clinch European glory in his seven-year stay at the Parc des Princes

Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has offered his congratulations to his old teammates after they finally clinched a first Champions League title on Saturday.

Mbappe signed to PSG from Monaco on loan in 2017, making the move permanent a year later, before going scoring 256 goals in 308 appearances. He joined Real Madrid last summer in pursuit of a new challenge.

He won 15 domestic honours including six Ligue 1 titles in his spell at the Parc des Princes, but European glory consistently eluded him. He reached the Champions League final in 2020, only to be beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich.

Silverware has not been forthcoming for Mbappe in Spain either, as Real finished second to Barcelona in both the Copa del Rey and La Liga this season.

PSG romped to their first Champions League title on Saturday after putting five goals past Inter Milan, with many crediting the win to the club’s new approach to the transfer market as key to the win.

This has seen them invest in talented young players rather than signing ‘Galacticos’ such as Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi. Those youngsters shone in the final, with the 19-year-old pairing of Desire Doue and Senny Mayulu responsible for three goals and an assist between them.

But there was no resentment from Mbappe, who took to Instagram to congratulate his former teammates, writing: "The big day has finally arrived. Victory and in the club’s style. Congratulations PSG."

He could face his former club this summer at the Club World Cup, which both PSG and Real are set to participate in. PSG kick off their campaign against Atletico Madrid, while Los Blancos are set to face Al Hilal in their opening fixture.
