Los Angeles FC again completes the bulk of its season roster with 21-year-old Ukrainian left back Artem Smolyakov arriving on a four-year contract, most recently of Polissya Zhytomyr. His defender deal keeps him there through 2028, with his taking one of the slots on the U22 Initiative and being an additional source of depth to the international contingent.

Who is Artem Smolyakov?

75 appearances for Polissya Zhytomyr and FC Inhulets Petrove in his professional career with four goals and three assists under his belt indicates Artem Smolyakov is a talented player to reckon with. He has also pulled 10 caps for Ukraine U21 national, proving his developmental potential.

Waiting for his time to come still as a young player, Smolyakov is a long-term investment but has enough experience to make him a potential starter. Young European prospects look at the MLS nowadays as an option, and the Ukrainian himself can now discover a step-up in his career by donning the LAFC jersey.

LAFC's smart move

Smolyakov's signing is not merely another marketplace move; it is part of LAFC's overall strategic planning. Left back Omar Campos' departure to Cruz Azul created an opening in the roster that had to be filled in an effective way.

LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington highlighted the significance of the signing: "Artem is a great young fullback who picks up valuable experience at LAFC early in his career. We are excited to add a player of his ability and potential to our squad as we continue to compete for honors across all competitions."

Thorrington's words reflect LAFC's aspirations. After a strong season, the club is intent on maintaining the momentum and fight for championships across the board.

The impact of this signing and LAFC's roster plan

With Smolyakov, LAFC strengthens its backline depth without sacrificing its dedication to signing young, skilled players. He is joined by Brazilian midfielder Igor Jesus, signed from Portugal's Estrela Amadora recently, under the U22 Initiative.

This plan not only strengthens the roster but also provides financial return in the future. Young players tend to appreciate in value, and MLS has proven itself to be a league that grows players and exports them to Europe and other premier leagues.

Additionally, Smolyakov will compete directly with the team's current fullbacks. Acclimating to the tempo of LAFC's game as quickly as possible will be key to his receiving regular minutes on the field.

If the Ukrainian pays off, then he has the potential to become a prized cog not only for this season but for seasons yet to come. Only time will tell whether the investment pays dividends.
