Iceland were headed for a draw against the USA in Texas until the hosts struck a late double, Spain needed a late leveller to deny Canada victory and Switzerland held Australia 1-1.

Germany raced into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour, Georgia Stanway pulled two goals back for England before Sara Dabritz got the visitors’ fourth and Lucy Bronze a third for the hosts.

Iceland pegged the USA back with a Selma Magnúsdóttir second-half goal cancelling out the opener from Alyssa Thompson but the Americans struck twice in the last five mionutes through Jaedyn Shaw and Sophia Smith.

Australia led Switzerland just before the break, after Elvira Herzog fouled Caitlin Foord in the penalty area and the Arsenal player got up to convert from the spot. Géraldine Reuteler’s goal approaching the hour mark would earn a draw for the Swiss.

France beat Jamaica 3-0, as first-half goals by Clara Matéo and Wendie Renard from a Kenza Dali corner were added to by Sandy Baltimore three minutes after the restart.

Canada took the lead in Spain early in the second half, when Marie-Yasmine Alidou hit the net from outside the box. But in the 89th-minute, Spain equalised with Cristina Martín-Prieto’s header from an Ona Batlle cross.

Japan scored three times in the space of five first-half minutes, to set up a 4-0 defeat of South Korea. Hikaru Kigatawa, Aoba Fujino and Mina Tanaka all struck, before Momoko Tanikawa added the fourth in the seocnd half.

Signe Bruun bagged a brace as Denmark put five second-half goals past South Africa, Kathrine Kühl with the last of those.

Italy also won 5-0 against Malta but Cristiana Girelli’s early goal – one of four assists by Emma Severini –  was not added to until a goal rush in the last 11 minutes.

Netherlands netted 15 times against Indonesia, Renate Jansen leading the way with a hat-trick, Jill Roord with a brace and Katja Snoeijs with a single also contributed to the tally.
