Highlights

  • West Bromwich Albion's summer transfer window was underwhelming, as they only made three signings, all of whom were free transfers.
  • The club had to offload players to manage their finances and their ownership situation remains uncertain.
  • West Brom is now looking to strengthen their midfield in January, with Callum Styles from Barnsley being a potential target. This could affect the playing time and future of current midfielder Alex Mowatt.

West Bromwich Albion will hope the January transfer window can be more successful than the summer one.

The Baggies were expected to be busy as Carlos Corberan shapes his squad for the new season.

However, that never happened, as West Brom only acquired three new signings in the whole of the summer, none of whom cost a transfer fee.

The Midlands side had to move players off their wage bill to allow other players into the club, and with the ongoing uncertainty involving ownership, Corberan saw finances restricted.

There is still uncertainty around the ownership, but the club is said to be in discussions with at least two potential buyers. So, with that news emerging Corberan will hope he can have some funds available in January to make some more necessary changes to his squad.

January isn’t a million miles away and the club are already being linked with potential winter targets, with Barnsley’s Callum Styles the latest name to emerge.

West Brom interested in Barnsley’s Callum Styles

According to TEAMtalk, West Brom are among a number of sides interested in signing Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles.

The report states that, as well as the Baggies, Premier League duo Sheffield United and Burnley are also keen on the Hungarian international. While European sides Union Berlin, Anderlecht, Braga, and Lens are also interested.

The midfielder started his career at Bury and played 47 times for the club before being signed by the Tykes in 2018.

The midfielder has been part of all the club’s recent success in League One, as well as Barnsley’s time in the Championship, where they nearly secured promotion to the Premier League.

Styles spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Championship side Millwall before returning to Oakwell in the summer, where he is now once again a main part of their side.

The report doesn’t say how much it could cost the Baggies to sign Styles, but given he is contracted to the club until the summer of 2025 and is a Hungarian international who will likely be playing in the Euro’s in the summer, it could cost West Brom and other interested sides a hefty fee.

As whenever a team signs a new player, there are always going to be players that hugely benefit from it, and there are going to be ones that don’t.

West Brom do need reinforcements in the midfield department, as the current options for Corberan are limited and have players that you could say are at the wrong age of their careers.

So, adding Styles would be a very good move by the club, but it will likely come at a cost for one player, and that player could be Alex Mowatt.

Mowatt has been at the Hawthorns since 2021, when he joined the club on a free transfer after leaving Barnsley.

The midfielder fell down the pecking order at the club last season and therefore spent the entire campaign on loan at fellow Championship side Middlesbrough.

He returned to the Baggies this summer, and Corberan decided to keep him as part of his squad, but the 28-year-old isn’t a regular feature under the Spaniard.

The midfielder has appeared in 14 league games this season, but Mowatt has only managed seven starts in those appearances, as he is considered to be behind the favourite pack.

Mowatt has done fairly well when he has played, averaging 41.3 passes per game, with 88.6% being considered successful, while he has also collected 1.6 key passes and has averaged 0.6 shots per game, as per WhoScored.com.

But given that he isn’t a regular in the West Brom team now, were the club to add to their midfield in January by bringing in Styles, then you could say that Mowatt’s time at the club may be coming to an end.

The 28-year-old will be entering the final six months of his contract at the Hawthorns, and even if he stays at the club beyond January, he may not be offered an extension on that deal, especially with Styles' potential arrival.
