Lazio are reportedly in a prime position to snatch the services of Velez Sarsfield youngster Valentin Gomez.
The 21-year-old is a left-footed central defender who started his career at Sarsfield’s academy, climbing his way up the club’s ranks to become a member of the senior squad in January 2022. This season, the Argentine has established himself as a true stalwart at the back, making 42 appearances across all competitions, contributing with one goal in the process.
According to TyC Sports, Gomez has been attracting the interest of the biggest clubs in Argentina. River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo contacted the defender’s agent, Hernán Reguera, directly, while Boca Juniors head coach Fernando Gago has him on the shortlist.
Nevertheless, the Argentine source believes Lazio are the favourites to land the young centre-back, as neither Buenos Aires giant would be able to match the financial strength of the Serie A club. The report adds that Gomez would be enticed to join the Biancocelesti as it would boost his chances of earning a call-up to the national team, as evidenced by Taty Castellanos’ case.
The San Miguel native has represented Argentina U20 on 10 occasions, but has yet to make his senior international debut. His transfer value is estimated by Transfermarkt at circa €10 million, while his contract with Sarsfield runs until December 2026.
