The situation at Lecce is extremely tense after a 3-0 home defeat to Como, as fans hurled insults and rejected the players, then coach Marco Giampaolo walked out of his interview.

The Salentini are without a victory in 10 Serie A rounds and continue to plunge towards the relegation zone.

This was a must-win fixture, but they were heavily beaten at the Stadio Via del Mare by an Assane Diao brace and rare Edoardo Goldaniga header.

Lecce fans were already hurling abuse towards the players and President Saverio Sticchi Damiani long before the final whistle, with an extremely tense atmosphere in the stands.

When the players did walk over to salute the ultras, they were told to turn around and go back to the locker room, effectively rejecting their apology.

It was felt in the media room too, because when Giampaolo arrived for his post-match interview with DAZN, it was very brief indeed.

“Look, you can analyse the game better than me, you are in a better position,” said the coach.

“I take responsibility, I am the coach and naturally I take that responsibility. I am very sorry for the 28,000 fans here today. I am sorry for those who stayed at home too. I am sorry for the club.

“There’s not much you can say after conceding three goals, so I don’t feel it right to justify anything. I take all the responsibility, at this moment there is just huge disappointment.

“Look, thank you everyone, but you talk about the game.”

With this, Giampaolo walked off and took no further questions.

He was only hired on November 11, 2024, and has overseen four wins, five draws and 12 defeats in Serie A.

The problems had started even before kick-off, a banner in the Lecce end aimed at President Sticchi Damiani.

‘From Bojinov to Dorgu, nothing has changed. You always put your interests ahead of the results.’

Patrick Dorgu was sold to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
