The Clarets have been credited with an interest in Kofi Shaw, others may regret not acting fast

Burnley have been linked with a potential move for Bristol Rovers youngster Kofi Shaw.

That’s according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, who states the Clarets are keeping tabs on the attacker’s progress.

Burnley’s advances could cause some regret in the camps of Leeds United and Southampton, who have both been linked with Shaw in the past.

But the Lancashire side face battles of their own before getting the deal over the line.

Leeds and Southampton could be punished for slow action over Bristol Rovers, Kofi Shaw deal

Leeds and Southampton were joined by Aston Villa in their interest in Shaw at the end of summer last year, according to Nixon at the time.

He was 17 years old at the time, having just made his league debut and with a handful of senior Rovers appearances to his name.

The same report revealed that the player was happy getting first-team minutes where he was, so that may explain why a move was never agreed for either team.

But with Burnley now one of the main names in contention, the potential to hold regrets over not pushing harder for the Whites and the Saints is clear.

Burnley won’t have a straight run at Shaw

However, the Clarets are not the only interested party thought to be tracking the progress of Shaw.

Nixon’s update also revealed that Premier League sides Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford are also interested in the teenager.

Currently second in the Championship table, Burnley may well be a Premier League side themselves when it comes to any negotiations, but the establishing top-tier pair will come with their own appeal.

That’s not to mention the fact that Southampton and Leeds are clearly aware of Shaw’s talent from their links last year, and nothing would prevent either re-entering the race.

There may be regrets down the road for Leeds and Southampton if Burnley did get it over the line, but there are no guarantees they will.

Bristol Rovers in a strong position for Kofi Shaw transfer negotiations

The interest from multiple angles for Shaw will likely make this an expensive deal to get over the line, and that won’t be helped by his secure contract position at the Gas.

He recently went out on loan to National League outfit Yeovil Town and, in the process, agreed a new contract with the Pirates to see him through until 2027.

Speaking to club media as his contract was announced in October, Shaw said: “I’m really pleased to have signed my new contract with Bristol Rovers.

“I have only seen my future at this club, so to have signed an extension shows the faith the club has in me and the belief I have that I can fulfil my potential here.”

It, therefore, sounds as though Shaw is happy where he is, which will only work to make any deal more difficult, and more expensive, to get over the line.

But the sorts of clubs interested in him – Brentford and Brighton, in particular, having a strong reputation for spotting young talent before they begin to blossom – shows the sort of potential Shaw may have.
